One of Lucky's better-known compositions, this medium swinger comes from the the classic Lucky Thompson/Oscar Pettiford trio recordings. Our quartet version has Minus You tracks for all instruments.

This song's title captures the brightness and warmth of Lucky's playing and writing style. Dancing Sunbeam is a bebopish 32-measure song with a pronounced bounce to the melodic rhythm. The chord progression is related to the standard I Remember You, with several important differences. There is no four-measure "tag" at the end of form as in I Remember You, and there are also some important tritone substitutions such as A♭7 in the second measure of the bridge instead of D7. The first four measures of the A section's changes are also different, ascending in whole steps to E7 for a tritone sub of B♭7. There is a rhythmic intro based on a pedal point, similar to those of a few other Lucky Thompson songs; the ending is a sort of two-measure tag.
In this arrangement, the bass doubles the tenor sax melody on the A sections, walking on the bridge. The arrangement on our quartet version is taken from this recording, so the lead sheets are applicable for both versions. Lucky's short fill on the last chord of the ending is notated in the lead sheets.

This second recording session by Lucky Thompson, Oscar Pettiford and Skeeter Best also produced The Plain But The Simple Truth, Little Tenderfoot, and Mister Man. The other session was recorded the following day and includes N R #1, N R #2, and Once There Was. Dancing Sunbeam was also recorded in 1994 by bassist Ed Bennett and in 2013 by bassist Johannes Ochsenbauer.

Lucky Thompson's Tenor Sax Solo: Lucky plays two choruses, the first accompanied only by bass CLIP and the second with guitar comping added. This solo is relatively simple but a classic example of Lucky's unique phrasing and a good place to start exploring his style. Notable chord alterations are indicated in the two-page transcription. Both B-flat and C editions are available.

Dancing Sunbeam is a really charming piece—fun to listen to and fun to play. Ranking at a 4.5-5 out of 10 for difficulty, it's also a good workout! The eight-measure intro has a slightly syncopated, modal feel that belies this lively and upbeat tune. As soon as you listen to it, you'll want to get on your bass and play along. The fingerings aren't very difficult—I played most of the upper register notes on the G-string and had no problem shifting back and forth to reach the notes in the lower octave.
It's a great piece to play along with the recording for bassists who are focusing on improvement, since Oscar Pettiford seamlessly switches back and forth between the melody line and walking. Pettiford's sense of time is immaculate on this album, and that's something every bassist wants: a strong enough pulse that no one misses the drums (and we don't on this track!). If you stay on your toes while playing along to make sure that you're locked into Pettiford and guitarist Skeeter Best, you'll learn how to both provide an unwavering pulse and play the melody.

Our quartet version is arranged similarly to the original trio recording. The drums add hits with the piano and bass on the intro, with mallets as in our version of The Plain But The Simple Truth. On the head, the first A section is played by trumpet and bass only, with the piano and drums entering on the second A section and comping for the remainder of the head. There is no fill on the last chord of the ending, but there is a piano hit added that is indicated in our lead sheet. To keep a subdued quality as in the original recording, the trumpet plays with a cup mute throughout and the drums with brushes except the intro.

Trumpeter/arranger Don Sickler first met bassist Daryl Johns when Daryl competed in the Thelonious Monk International Bass Competition at the end of 2009. Don immediately envisioned Daryl playing Lucky Thompson compositions, and with the Thompson/Pettiford album in mind, Don organized the trip to the Van Gelder Studio that resulted in this recording.

Dancing Sunbeam has a joyous melody that is played in unison by the trumpet and the bass. During the intro the drums play the hits with the bass. On this recording, the drums tacet during the first iteration of the melody, entering the second time around with brush time. Steve Johns opts to stick with brushes for the entire recording. This works great, but this Minus You track also gives you the freedom to experiment with sticks or to practice transitioning between sticks and brushes at moments when the music calls for such a change. For example, when the solo section starts, the drummer could switch to sticks, then back to brushes for the bass solo to keep the volume down and create contrasting sections and energies within the music. Eli "Lucky" Thompson
June 16, 1923 – July 30, 2005
Saxophonist Lucky Thompson is one of the great treasures of jazz. He was born in Columbia, South Carolina, but was raised in Detroit, Michigan. He played in local groups with Hank Jones, Sonny Stitt and others. In August, 1943, when he was 19, he left Detroit with Lionel Hampton's Orchestra, eventually arriving in New York City. Still a teenager, his first recording date was with Hot Lips Page on March 18, 1944. Later in 1944 he started recording with both Lucky Millinder and Count Basie. Read more...
