The audio excerpt starts with the melody. Big John Patton's organ soars over the introduction, which is cued in the C treble clef leadsheet. The two horns play the whole head in unison, except that instead of a solo break for the first soloist, they play figures in harmony. The figures are indicated in all lead sheets, giving the option of taking a solo break or playing what is on the recording. Here is another great chart that fits the album concept, "Soul Groove."
Johnny Griffin moved to Europe right after the two sessions that comprise this album. Check out Here for info about the other session. Matthew Gee and Johnny Griffin had already had a long working relationship before this date (see Wow! which was first recorded in 1948). A month before this date, Matthew was recording with vocalist Dakota Staton for United Artists.
Like most trombonists, Matthew was at home in both small group and big band settings. He recorded with the Duke Ellington Orchestra from 1959 to 1961 and in small and larger Illinois Jacquet bands from 1952 through 1969.
