A beautifully lyrical, expressive song with a long form and colorful changes. The key signature is G major, which is the first chord, but much of the 16-measure A sections have a B♭ major tonality. However, the end of the C section resolves back to G major for a cyclical form. The first note of the melody is played at the beginning of the first solo chorus; this is shown in our Minus You parts. The second halves of the two A sections are different, so the entire form is written out with no repeats. The bridge is 24 measures long; the last eight measures are open for solo fills on C♯m11.
Our Minus You parts show the piano intro from the recording, which is based on the bridge. Our parts also have an extended “coda” starting on the last 8 measures of the bridge, to show the flugelhorn fills on the Minus Melody track. The out head ends on the 13th measure of the C section with an E♭ major chord. See the Minus You tab for details.
Rhythm section players should get the C treble clef part (or C bass clef).

Dena DeRose is a well-known pianist, vocalist, composer, and educator. Born in Binghamton, NY, she began learning piano at age three. As a child, piano was her main musical passion, but she also took up organ and percussion in her youth. It was the music of Count Basie that initially pushed Dena into jazz, although she grew to idolize Hank Jones and Mulgrew Miller in her teen years. When she began studying at Binghamton University, she started to devote her life to jazz piano, practicing and playing around Binghamton constantly. Read more...
