Full of anticipation and syncopation, Little J.J. is a high-energy composition that will invigorate your set. The form is somewhat unusual—each section is different (and different lengths, too) giving it constant forward motion. The A and C sections are punctuated with short, clipped notes and rhythm section hits, while the B and D sections feature longer melody lines. The B section section has a two-measure rhythm pattern that could be used in the solo section, or could be treated as "broken time" by the rhythm section (as notated in the solo chorus section). The chord progression is simplified for the solo section, so separate solo sections are added to each edition.
Although this was a trio recording, we've made horn parts available and suggest you try it.
While Little J.J. may be a bit challenging for beginner musicians, this chart is well worth the extra effort, with its excitement and exuberance.

We initially featured Rob Bargad as a composer of vocal selections previously on jazzleadsheets.com—Another World and All Because Of You—but this is our first instrumental composition from the composer. Little J.J. comes from one of Rob's two early sessions as a leader, but was recorded during a period of his career when he was best known as a sideman: from 1991 to 1999, Rob worked and toured in the Nat Adderley Quintet. It was not until 2007, with the release of "Mom's Good Wishes," that Rob had another album out as a leader, but he remained active as a songwriter and arranger in the interim.
