- Minus You
This dreamy ballad floats through an unusual 20- bar form (a modified AABA with an elongated B section). Rob Bargad's effortless pairing of lyric and melody results in a rhythm that mirrors natural speech patterns, giving the ballad a free, relaxed feeling, even as it builds in intensity in the B section. Our audio excerpt starts with the melody entrance. The recording and the Minus You version (without vocal) no-vocal both have an introduction (not notated in the lead sheet).
Lyric Description: Rob's lyric matches the ethereal feeling of the ballad—it describes a dream of a beautiful love that disappears in the morning, a dream in which the singer wants to remain forever.
No-Vocal Version: Our no-vocal version is in the same key as the original Dena DeRose recording (C minor), but uses a pared-down arrangement so you can focus on nailing the vocals. This recording features Cecilia Coleman on piano, Tim Givens on bass and Vince Cherico on drums. It's just one time through the head instead of repeating the form for an A section solo (as Dena does on her recording).
If another key would be better for you, send the key you'd like to Don and we'll post the transposition on the website for purchase. If you're not sure which key is best, send us your range and we'll work with you to figure out the best key.

We're putting this recording up in honor of the bassist Dwayne Burno, who tragically passed away in December 2013 and is heard holding down the rhythm section on Dena DeRose's track.
