A simple ballad with a warm sound. The form is 18 measures long, divided into eight-measure A and ten-measure B sections. There are only two melodic theme ideas, which are developed in a few different ways. The first theme takes up the A section while the second theme comes in at the B section. The fifth and sixth measures of the B section have the same melody as the third and fourth measures of the A section, but harmonized differently with D♭7 as a tritone substitution for G7. The melody is almost entirely diatonic, and the changes are mostly II-V7-based.
This recording is in Al Grey's original key of C. There is an optional one-measure pickup in the melody, which should be played with this version; the piano holds out one note (G) for a measure before the beginning of the head. Our C bass clef lead sheet is written in the same octave as the C treble clef lead sheet, as this is the range where Al played it.
The Minus You audio tracks are excellent for practicing ballad intrepretation; great also for the rhythm section members to practice their supporting roles.

"Further Explorations" was recorded at the legendary Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs.
Al Grey recorded this song twice, both in France in the '70s. The first of these recordings was in 1972 with organist Wild Bill Davis; the other, in 1977, has both piano (Andre Persiany) and organ (Sir Charles Thompson). A three-horn arrangement of this song is part of Second Floor Music's Easy Sextet Set, available from music dealers.

This piece is a ballad with a relatively conventional form and chord changes. Lots of drummers don't like ballads or play too loud (or too predictably) without taste. Accompanying this Minus You track will help you build a sense of how to accompany a melody and solo at a slow tempo with brushes, which although not flashy, is one of the most important aspects of jazz drumming. Check out Vince Cherico's approach on the full recording.
Drummers should get the C lead sheet.

Al Grey
June 6, 1925 – March 24, 2000
As a youth, trombonist Grey enjoyed hanging out at the Sunnybrook Ballroom, where Louis Armstrong and other jazz greats would come on tour, and which still exists today as part of a park complex in Pottstown, PA. During World War II, Grey excelled as a bugler, tuba player and bandmaster in the Navy. Read more...
