Featuring an all-star sextet, "Sonny's Crib" is a truly prime slice of the hard-swinging fifties hard-bop sound that remains the foundation for many musicians today. Although Sonny Clark had only moved to New York a few months prior to this session, the laid-back swagger of his musical voice converses clearly and confidently with the top-notch band, with his comping's lush propulsion and the velvet punch of his lines coaxing inspired reactions from the soloists (including John Coltrane in his only recorded appearance with Clark) and rhythm section alike.

While the band stomps and soars through three classic Songbook standards (With A Song In My Heart, Speak Low, and Come Rain Or Come Shine), they're at their most inspired on Clark's two charismatic originals, Sonny's Crib and News For Lulu, with the stop-time blues of the former featuring a truly red-hot Coltrane solo (in the middle of his famous Five-Spot residency with Thelonious Monk's band) and the funky gait of the latter featuring some exceptional languorous weaving by Clark.

Along with Clark, jazzleadsheets.com is also proud to offer music by Curtis Fuller and Paul Chambers, whose compositions you should absolutely check out!
