A gorgeous Kenny Dorham composition, well deserving of lyrics. The title reflects the form: there truly is "no end" as the end of the melody cycles back to the start for next chorus. The intro begins rubato, with four melody phrases over held-out rhythm section chords; a bass line then sets up tempo for eight measures before the melody, continuing into the first four of the melody. Both sections of the intro have lyrics; they reappear in reverse order (bass line and then rubato chords) as a coda. As demonstrated by Rachel Gould on this recording, the lyrics in the bass line sections can be spoken rather than sung with the bass. Check out the vocal duo arrangement (second album cover) for a version where the bass line is sung in time.

Don Sickler: "This song was never recorded in Kenny Dorham's lifetime, either instrumentally or vocally. The instrumental version, No End, was first recorded in 1974 by Jimmy Heath. Jimmy and Curtis Fuller both told me that Kenny taught the song to them, by singing it, years ago; neither man forgot a note!
When I played the instrumental for Rachel Gould, as part of my efforts to get lyrics written to songs in our catalog, she was so inspired by the music that she wrote a perfect lyric, reflecting the circling melody and harmonies and the philosophy."

A vocal duo arrangement by Don Sickler, for female and male voices (alto and tenor). The melody is passed around between the two voices; in a few places they harmonize, and sometimes one voice has wordless countermelodies ("oo") around the other part's melody.
For the intro, the two voices trade melody phrases in the first eight measures. The male voice then sets up the tempo with the bass line (with lyrics), accompanied only by piano. The vocal bass line continues under the first four measures of the melody (wordless with "doo" syllables), and the bass comes in on the fifth measure. The first four measures of the B section are arranged the same way.

For our recording, Denise Donatelli and Allan Harris overdubbed their vocals on the rhythm section of a take from our 2005 Rachel Gould session. Besides the original vocals, we also edited out the bass on the sections where Allan sang the bass line. Check out Norman Simmons' piano solos on both this version and Rachel's original recording—two different takes from the same session which showcase Norman as both master accompanist and soloist.

Rachel Gould, born in Camden, New Jersey, has a deeply personal style and a rich, low voice that are instantly recognizable. A graduate of Boston University for cello and classical voice, Gould began singing professionally in the 1970s in the United States.
