This Ralph Moore composition is not for the faint of heart. Twisting bebop-influenced lines race through the melody. Light, angular, and daring, Line D is everything a modern bop composition should be. The recorded arrangement begins with a two-chorus tenor solo over the form, accompanied only by Victor Lewis on drums. Our audio excerpt begins after this introduction with the entrance of the melody. On this arrangement, the piano doubles the melody with Ralph—a nice touch.
Although recorded as a quartet with tenor sax, we've provided a B-flat trumpet part.

Except for a recording he made while in school at Berklee, Ralph's first recording was with the Eubanks brothers and their cousin, Charles. On the 1982 Kevin Eubanks "Guitarist" session, Kevin was joined by brothers Robin (trombone) and David (bass), with cousin Charles on piano and Ralph on tenor sax, along with special guest drummers including Roy Haynes. Many years later, Ralph joined Kevin for a new project: playing together in the Tonight Show Band for Jay Leno. Kevin Eubanks was the leader of the Tonight Show Band under Jay Leno when Ralph played saxophone in it from 1995-2010.
In 1985, Ralph made his first trip to engineer Rudy Van Gelder's studio to record with Valery Ponomarev (see Take Care and Fifteenth Round). Line D comes from Ralph's fifth album as a leader.
