Bassist George Duvivier, one of the most reliable, talented and dedicated bass players on the East Coast recording scene, wrote this song (words and music) in the mid-1940s when he was a young man in his early twenties. The beautiful chord progression and melody certainly shows how sensitive and articulate he had already become, musically and harmonically.
Lyric Description: In Alone With Just My Dreams, the narrator describes in often-poetic terms the emptiness that is felt when a love affair is over.
No-vocal version: The complete ballad recording is also available without the vocal track, so you can have your chance to express the song with the rhythm section.
If another key would be better for you, send the key you'd like to Don and we'll post the transposition on the website for purchase. If you're not sure which key is best, send us your range and we'll work with you to figure out the best key.

"The JazzLeadSheets Songbook" was recorded at the legendary Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs.
Trumpeter Joe Wilder was the first to record this composition, in 1991, as an instrumental. George and Joe were good friends and recorded together on over 30 sessions, starting in 1947 with the Jimmy Lunceford band, on such diverse albums as Tadd Dameron's "The Magic Touch" to Neal Hefti, Jimmy Smith, and vocalists Dakota Staton and Mark Murphy. Pianist James Williams accompanied Wilder on his 1991 recording, along with Jay Leonhart on bass, Sherman Ferguson on drums and Remo Palmieri on guitar .
This lead sheet is also found in our Sing JAZZ! songbook, a collection of stunning, lesser-known vocal selections from the Second Floor Music repertoire (Sing JAZZ! contents).

The vocal Minus You track is one chorus long. Our lead sheet contains a first and second ending; if you are doing this without the Minus You track, the first ending can be used to go back to the A section for solos, but on the recording only the second ending is played. The one-measure piano intro is written in the lead sheet; it cues in the melody.
