Bernie Hanighen is best remembered for writing the lyrics to Thelonious Monk's standard 'Round Midnight. Hanighen, however, was not only a lyricist but a composer as well.
He collaborated with lyricist Johnny Mercer on many songs including When A Woman Loves A Man, popularized by Billie Holiday, as well as songs in more of a novelty vein such as Poor Mr. Chisholm (a hit for Fred Astaire).
In the late 1930s and early '40s, Hanighen associated with that liminal Harlem scene that ultimately gave rise to bebop. He worked closely with Billie Holiday, co-producing several of her recordings for the Columbia label. Besides Monk, another bebop-era composer he wrote lyrics for was Tadd Dameron, whose song I Remember Love and others have Hanighen lyrics.
