Our audio excerpt starts with the horn melody, but the recording opens with a rubato introduction which is notated on all lead sheets. The rubato intro moves into eight measures in "time" which sets up the melody. The melody starts with simple melodic elements and gradually develops, climaxing at the end of the bridge. It is a 68-measure composition: A(16) A2(16) B(16) A(20).
Cheryl Pyle wrote a lyric to Waltz No. 1, titled Two Reflect As One. The lyric was recorded by vocalist Gloria Cooper and the lead sheet with lyric, also in F minor, is available. For instrumentalists and vocalists both, we've made available a no-vocal, no-melody MP3 version of the track without a solo section.

This is Michael Cochrane's first recorded composition in 3/4, as you can tell from the title. Cochrane started his recording career with trumpeter Hannibal Marvin Peterson in 1973. He did his first recording with Sonny Fortune in 1976 and continues to work with him -- their last recording together was as recent as 2009. In 1985, Michael recorded Waltz No. 1 on his first album as a leader.
