This is an unusual blues construction in the challenging key of A-flat minor. Steve Davis camouflages the start of his blues melody with a four-measure introduction (featuring pianist Hank Jones), then using fragments of the intro in the melody. The unusual fifteen-measure blues format is echoed in the written-out chord progression. The recording also features harmonized horn parts, so second part editions are available.
Don Sickler: "I remember Steve telling me what a thrill it was for him to get to record with Hank Jones, and on Steve's own record! A dream of a lifetime. Steve has always had a love affair with the Jones family and this is his tribute to them: T.H.E. = Thad, Hank, Elvin."

Steve Davis
born on April 14, 1967
Steve Davis is widely regarded as one of today's leading improvisers on the trombone. His lyrical, hard-swinging style first gained him broad recognition during the 1990s while working with the bands of jazz legends Art Blakey, Jackie McLean, Chick Corea's Origin and the cooperative sextet, One For All. Steve also followed in his mentor Curtis Fuller's footsteps by joining saxophone legend Benny Golson and The New Jazztet in 2008. Read more...
