Our audio excerpt starts with the last four measures of the rhythm section intro. The intro starts with bass alone, then drums are added, then piano (clearly notated in each lead sheet). Note that the trombone plays the two-measure melody pattern over a two octave range, while the alto sax keeps the melody pattern within one octave. Two separate B-flat parts are available. The B-flat Tenor Sax lead sheet mirrors the Trombone (see C bass clef part), and the B-flat Trumpet lead sheet mirrors the Alto Sax on the recording (E-flat lead sheet).
Steve says that Mission is dedicated to everyone at the Artists Collective in Hartford, CT, a multi-arts and cultural organization founded by Jackie McLean emphasizing the cultural and artistic contributions of the African Diaspora.
"Outlook" is Steve Davis' twelfth recording as a leader. He's also a very talented composer and arranger. 2006, the year Mission was recorded, was a very productive year for Steve. In February, One For All recorded their CD "The Lineup." Steve also played on two big band recording projects in 2006, first with Jimmy Heath, and then with John Fedchock. Sandwiched in between his June and November "Outlook" sessions, he also recorded with Larry Willis.
Some of Steve's combo charts from the One For All recordings are available from Second Floor Music at MusicDispatch.com.

Transcribed Trombone Solo: Our audio excerpt starts with Steve's pick up into his third solo chorus trombone. He takes five solo choruses in all.

Steve Davis
born on April 14, 1967
Steve Davis is widely regarded as one of today's leading improvisers on the trombone. His lyrical, hard-swinging style first gained him broad recognition during the 1990s while working with the bands of jazz legends Art Blakey, Jackie McLean, Chick Corea's Origin and the cooperative sextet, One For All. Steve also followed in his mentor Curtis Fuller's footsteps by joining saxophone legend Benny Golson and The New Jazztet in 2008. Read more...
