This is from the first of Norman's three CDs for the Savant label as a leader. Norman's first album as a leader was in 1955 for the Argo label ("The Norman Simmons Trio"). A motivated young musician, Norman had formed his own group in 1949 and began recording in 1952. He kept a steady gig leading the house trio at Chicago's hottest jazz club, The Beehive, where his group would back touring greats like saxophonists Wardell Gray, Lester Young and Charlie Parker. Norman began accompanying jazz singers in 1958 and quickly earned a reputation as an exceptional accompanist, a role that would keep him busy for much of his career.

Accomplished soloist, accompanist, composer and educator, Norman Simmons is well known as a pianist with an great ability to connect with jazz singers. Born in Chicago, Simmons taught himself piano and at age sixteen enrolled in the Chicago School of Music. He formed his own group in 1949 and began recording in 1952 when he worked as a house pianist for Chicago clubs The BeeHive and the C&C Lounge. During this period, his first recordings were under the leadership of tenor saxophonists Claude McLin, Paul Bascomb and Coleman Hawkins. Read more...
