The fanfare-like start, which also sets up drum fills for leader and drummer Art Blakey, develops into a 16-measure ensemble introduction. Our audio excerpt starts with the intro, which is notated in all lead sheets, with both horn parts also indicated. This is great as a set opener.
The melody switches to a 2-feel and moves smoothly and convincingly over the changes. Don Sickler recalls, "I remember the first time I played this arrangement, I didn't realize that Hank had borrowed the chord progression from Confirmation until I got into the solo section. He also changed the key to C concert."
