Nuts And Bolts – Ray Bryant
An uptempo drum feature, a showcase for brushes. It's almost through-composed, with Latin, swing, and stop-time sections. Our "Further Explorations" version has Minus You tracks for any melody instrument and for drums. Ray himself is on piano, all versions!

Both of Ray's recordings of this song, and our "Further Explorations" version on which Ray plays, have the same form. A 16-measure Latin vamp intro sets up the melody. After the head is a drum solo chorus, with the same hits in the last four measures of the A and C sections as in the head. The C section (F in the lead sheet) is not tagged. The melody chorus is then taken out from the bridge.
This recording differs from the others in a few ways, most notably on the drum chorus whose bridge is almost entirely solo drums. The piano and bass have hits in the last measure, but in the other versions they hold out chords for two measures each as in the "trading 2s" on the bridge of the in chorus.
Lead sheets available under the "Con Alma" album cover are identical to those under the "All Mine And Yours" cover. The Minus You lead sheets, under the "Further Explorations" cover, are in a different key (F) and are tailored to the Minus You audio tracks.
At the time of the "Con Alma" session, drummer Mickey Roker's only previous jazz recording experience had been three classic Gigi Gryce albums.
Ray recorded Nuts And Bolts again in 1989 on the live album "All Mine . . . And Yours" with Rufus Reid on bass and Winard Harper on drums. This latter version is considerably faster but has the same arrangement.

Ray Bryant
December 24, 1931 – June 2, 2011
Following performances in his native Philadelphia with guitarist Tiny Grimes and as house pianist at the Blue Note Club with Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Miles Davis and others, Ray Bryant came to New York in the mid-1950s. His first jazz recording session in New York was with Toots Thielemans (August, 1955) for Columbia Records. That session led to his own trio sessions as well as sessions with vocalist Betty Carter for Epic Records in May and June ("Meet Betty Carter and Ray Bryant"). On August 5, 1955, Ray recorded with Miles Davis, and on December 2, 1955, with Sonny Rollins, both for Prestige Records. Read more...
