A calypso song with a cheerful sound, Nino's Scene is very satisfying to play and solo on. There's really one basic melodic idea, which is repeated in a descending sequence in the A and C sections of this 32-measure AABC song. The bridge has a similar melodic rhythm as well. The changes are very logical and sound familiar even though they're not based on any standard.

On this recording, there is an intro with the drums setting up the calypso groove for four measures, followed by a rhythm section vamp on C7 (12 measures in this case). The intro vamp could also be C major, or with only drums.

This album has an unusual history. It was issued as a live album from the Museum of Modern Art in New York, when in fact it was a studio album with audience applause overdubbed. Art Farmer's quintet played at MoMA in 1966; this was in fact recorded, with three tracks released on a reissue of "The Time And The Place" and the full performance finally put out on CD by Mosaic in 2007 as "The Time And The Place - The Lost Concert." This live album has Albert Dailey on piano instead of Cedar Walton; Nino's Scene was not played at this concert.

The rhythm section heard here, as well as tenor saxophonist Jimmy Heath, played on Milt Jackson's December 1966 album "Born Free." Cedar Walton and Walter Booker played on several recordings together in 1967 and 1968, mostly with Billy Higgins on drums for example on Hank Mobley's "Third Season." Cedar first recorded with drummer Mickey Roker on another classic Blue Note album, trumpeter Blue Mitchell's "Boss Horn" in November 1966.

Sergio Mihanovich was a beloved composer in his native Buenos Aires. In Argentina, Sergio was active in many areas: writing soundtracks for Argentine films and theatrical productions; working in nightclubs; recording in both jazz (performing and recording with saxophonist Gato Barbieri) and pop settings; as an educator; and as a writer of both music and words. In the 1960s Sergio lived in the United States for a time, writing the songs that eventually became part of the Second Floor Music catalog and working as a pianist/vocalist/composer. Read more...
