In November we celebrated Gigi Gryce’s centennial! Now available are scores and parts for three of Gigi’s octet arrangements from the 1957 Dizzy Gillespie album “The Greatest Trumpet Of Them All.” Smoke Signal is a newly added song from this album; the others are A Night At Tony’s and Shabozz, which are very different from Gigi’s original quintet recordings of these songs with trumpeter Art Farmer. If you have an octet (trumpet, alto sax, tenor sax, trombone, baritone sax, piano, bass, drums) these arrangements will be an exciting addition to your repertoire. They sound great and are a masterclass in the hard-bop style.
