This ballad by Rachel Gould is delicate and ethereal. The melody is lyrical by itself, but the way it fits with the chords under it is unexpected and often magical. Our audio excerpt starts with the first bars of the song.
Rachel's recording begins rubato with voice and piano. At the bridge, the entire rhythm section enters. After Rachel finishes the verse, there are three half-chorus solos from Marcello Tonolo on piano, Marco Tamburini on trumpet, and Paolo Ghetti on bass. Rachel returns on the bridge of the verse. Mirroring the beginning of the tune, she sings the final A section of the verse rubato with piano. The rhythm section enters at the end with a freely improvised rubato ending with a hint of mystery.
Lyric Description: This fanciful lyric by Rachel is sure to enchant: she tells the story of a fairy gift—a magical ring—that weaves dreams and brings sunshine, chasing away the clouds and the nighttime moon. The lyric perfectly captures the innocence, hope, and wonder of a fascinated child with a wild imagination.
Vocal Transcription: Rachel notates the rhythms on the lead sheet quite simply, using many half notes and quarter notes. The vocal transcription from her original recording shows the complex rhythmic patterns and phrasing she uses, as well as her melodic embellishments. Comparing this to the lead sheet can reveal how this masterful vocalist turns the music on the page into a convincing performance.

Vocalist Rachel Gould first came into the Second Floor Music world when she met Don Sickler at an IAJE (International Association of Jazz Educators, a now-defunct organization) convention in New York in 2005. Rachel's talent and reputation preceded her arrival; Don had heard great things about the legendary vocalist, teacher, composer and lyricist from many sources, including Judy Niemack and Italian vocalist Roberta Gambarini.
