With its colorful harmonies using altered chord extensions, this song has no main key center. The intro and head are decorated with rhythm section figures and hits, forming a sort of counterpoint with the melody. The form is AABA with eight-measure A sections and an 11-measure bridge that, in the head, goes to a Latin feel for the last four measures. The five-measure intro is also used as an interlude before and between the solos, as well as as an ending. The solo changes are simplified from the head, but still retain several of the colorful chord extensions. In the first chorus of each solo, the A and C sections (D and F on the lead sheet) are played with a loose 2-feel, going to 4-feel for the bridge and throughout subsequent choruses.
The C lead sheet includes Kikoski's harmony part which is sometimes above, sometimes below the melody in this arrangement. It also shows the bass line in the Latin section.
With the complex chords and rhythm section figures, this song is perfect for a rhythm section workout. We have a Rhythm Section Workshop recording available for piano, bass, or drums to play along with; click on the second album cover for more details.

This is the second recording of Cecilia. The first was made in 1987, on tenor player Ralph Moore's album "623 C Street" which features Kikoski, bassist Buster Williams and drummer Billy Hart. The arrangement on that recording is similar, but with the bass "in 2" for the first measure of the intro/interlude. Kikoski harmonizes the melody only in the first phrase of the second A section and C section.
"Combinations" is David's tenth album as a leader. It features the four players in different solo, duo, and trio combinations as well as the full quartet. In August of the same year, David recorded two albums in Tokyo: "The Five," with the same lineup as on "Combinations" plus Alex Sipiagin on trumpet, and "Comfortable Strange" with just Kozlov and Watts.

Solo Piano Arrangement David's solo piano arrangement highlights all the altered chord extensions that define this song. The right-hand A section melody is harmonized throughout, slightly differently from the original quartet recording. There is a left-hand line in the fourth measure of the intro/interlude that is not actually played on either of the Kikoski recordings or our Rhythm Section Workshop recording. This line is also included in the Rhythm Section Workshop Piano part—check out our Rhythm Section Workshop recording for more details.
Because of the busy rhythm section activity, we have a Bass Part with all the figures for the intro/interlude and head, as played by Boris Kozlov on this recording. Some of the articulation and phrasing is different from our Rhythm Section Workshop—click on the second album cover for information about the Rhythm Section Workshop Bass part.

Our Rhythm Section Workshop recording is slightly slower than Kikoski's quartet version. It's a rewarding challenge to keep up with the varied rhythm section figures.
Minus You tracks are available for piano, bass, and drums. Details under the Minus You tab. Click on Piano Corner and Bass Corner tabs to see how the piano and bass parts differ from those on Kikoski's original recording.

"Rhythm Section Workshop" was recorded at the legendary Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs.
Drummer Evan Hughes spent a few years at Second Floor Music/jazzleadsheets.com, transcribing the playing of various drummers who played SFM titles. He also learned to shoot and edit video, resulting in a popular YouTube video of him playing along with Philly Joe Jones on Hank Mobley's No Room For Squares (see the video on the song page).
Before leaving NY for a new life in his native California, Evan and pianist Glenn Zaleski teamed up with bassist Bill Moring, rehearsing and ultimately recording some "Rhythm Section Workshop" titles.

Pianist Glenn Zaleski harmonizes the right hand melody only on the C section; this is indicated in the Rhythm Section Workshop Piano part. As with the Solo Piano Arrangement, there is a left hand bass figure on the fourth measure of the intro/interlude written in this part; though it is not played on our recording, pianists have the option to include it when playing along with our Minus Piano track.

The Rhythm Section Workshop Bass part differs from the original bass part in a few places. There is an extra hit on the "and" of beat 4 in the fourth measure of the intro/interlude; on the original recording this hit was played by piano and drums only. The downbeat on the fifth measure of the A section is not anticipated as it is in the original version.
